Toyota's worldwide bestseller hasn't seen much success in India because it is a CBU, giving it a high price tag. However, quality is faultless, and ride comfort are right up there with the best. The automatic with its four-speed gearbox has fallen behind the competition, which are running upto seven speeds.
Toyota has launched the refreshed Camry hybrid in the India market at Rs 31.92 lakh, ex-showroom Delhi. The product will continue to appeal to the environment conscious car buyer and in its updated avatar, should find a younger audience base. The petrol variant also gets the update and is priced at Rs 28.8 lakh.
There are a handful of hybrid cars in India; when I say handful, I mean just three. There's the Toyota Prius, Camry and the BMW i8. That's it. So, when Toyota said that there is a facelift coming of the Camry Hybrid, I was a bit surprised. Considering that the segment hasn't really picked up in terms of sales, it was a move that made everyone wonder about the strategy they had.
There are two driving modes to choose from - EV and Eco. The EV mode kicks in if you're stuck in traffic, as it doesn't allow you to go above 40km/h. If you switch to Eco mode where the electric motor and the petrol engine work hand-in-hand with one another, the hybrid systems jigsaw is solved. The result is that you're immediately transported into an evolved and refined driving experience, not to forget an efficient one.
The interiors of the car are also the same as the ones shown on the 2015 Camry facelift showcased at the Moscow Motor Show in August 2014. The car does not get any changes under the hood, the Camry Hybrid will still be powered by a 202 BHP / 483 Nm hybrid system which consists of a 2.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine and a 650 V electric motor generator. The Camry Hybrid does get a 8% increase in fuel-efficiency though, for the model sold in Japan. The model sold in India currently delivers 19.16 KMPL.
Price
The official statement regarding the price is yet to come out but expect it to cost more than the Rs. 25-30 Lakh it does in India, by Rs. 1-1.5 Lakh at the least.l
