Honda City

A few years ago, if you were in the market for an efficient family sedan, an automatic variant would most likely not make it to your wish list. Because ATs back then were considered too expensive to buy and maintain, and were known to drain the fuel tank faster than a manual car. Plus, they weren’t too involving to drive, and were lethargic when it came to outright performance.

The new Honda City, however, is finally here, and in the ‘right’ spec. Sure, the diesel is efficient and the CVT automatic is convenient but none of them can quite match the charm of that fabulous 1.5 petrol engine run through a manual gearbox. But it is important to remember you can bag yourself a City for much less. Manual versions of the petrol start at a relatively affordable Rs 8.93 lakh, and though the base version lacks basics like an audio system and an airbag for the front passenger, the SV MT is much better equipped and much better value at Rs 10.39 lakh.

The outgoing Honda City had come under fire from certain quarters when it launched in 2009 because of some of the cheap plastics used in the interior, most notably the AC controls. Honda has now ensured that they haven’t repeated that error – the City’s interiors have undergone an update and it is a very comprehensive one. As you get into the driver’s seat, you will notice the way the centre console is angled prominently towards the driver.
